Creating Safe Access and Egress

Barnfield Engineering was entrusted with the task of creating safe access and egress to a drain discharge chamber. When the Slow Sand Filter beds are being drained, this chamber is crucial for redirecting flows back into rivers. In order to replace the corroded originals and improve access capabilities and ensure safe and effective operations, Barnfield Engineering completed the full strategy for designing, constructing, and installing GMS platforms.

Project Scope

  • Designing, making, and installing GMS platforms to take the place of the original, corroded structures and offer space and better access possibilities.
  • Designing and putting in bottom landings with hatches to make it easier to clean the drain of sand before emptying it into the river. To ensure safety and security, these hatches would be locked while not in use.
  • Using two Barnfield engineers and a HIAB waggon to complete the installation.
  • Completing the installation within two days.
  • Ensuring that all projects were completed in compliance with WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications) standards and the appropriate Asset standard.

Execution

Design and Fabrication of GMS Platforms

Barnfield Engineering meticulously designed and fabricated GMS platforms to replace the corroded originals. The new platforms were constructed to provide the  sewer discharge chamber more room and better access options. These platforms were built to endure extreme weather conditions utilising sturdy materials.

Installation of Bottom Landings

Bottom landings were created and built in order to make it easier to remove sand from the drain. Access to the drain was made possible by these landings, allowing for effective maintenance and discharge processes. Two hatches were provided on each landing, which could be securely shut when not in use to maintain safety and bar unwanted access.

Installation Process

A HIAB waggon and two knowledgeable Barnfield engineers were used in the installation operation. The GMS platforms and bottom landings were easier to move and place thanks to the HIAB waggon. The buildings were expertly erected by the experts, who made sure of their stability and precise alignment. The Hampton WTW activities were barely interrupted during the rapid two-day completion of the installation.

Results and Benefits

Barnfield Engineering's implementation of safe access and egress to a drain discharge chamber yielded several positive outcomes and benefits, including:

  • GMS platforms are being used to replace the original, rusted structures, improving access and adding more space for operations.
  • Installing bottom landings with hatches makes it possible to remove sand from the drain effectively before letting it flow into the river.
  • Improved security and safety thanks to the hatches' locking system, which bars unauthorised entrance.
  • Effective installation procedure finished in two days with the least amount of downtime and operating disturbances.
  • Compliance with the appropriate Asset standard and WIMES standards, ensuring that the project complies with standards for quality and industry compliance.

Conclusion

Barnfield Engineering successfully created safe access and egress to a drain discharge chamber. By designing, fabricating, and installing GMS platforms and bottom landings, the project improved operational efficiency, enhanced safety measures, and complied with industry standards. Barnfield Engineering's expertise and commitment to quality ensured a successful project outcome.
